God is Like Jesus

“The Image of the Invisible God...” (Colossians 1:15)

The interesting thing about Colossians 1:15 is that the chief characteristic of something that’s invisible is that you can’t see it... it doesn’t have an image. But Colossians still tells us that Jesus is the image of the invisible God.  The invisible God is visible after all.... visible in the firstborn of all creation, visible in Jesus. Colossians is telling us that If we want to know what God looks like, we need to look no further than Jesus.

When we see Jesus healing, casting out demons, and calming storms, it’s not the miraculous that truly at stake... it’s not that Jesus is looking quite a bit like God today...  The good news is that God is like Jesus, God looks like Jesus. When we see Jesus dining with sinners, associating with outcasts—when we see Jesus tortured and executed at the hands of the very people he refused not to love—we see God. When we look at Jesus, we see what God is like. God is a healer. God casts out demons. God calms storms. God eats with us. God suffers for us, at our hands. God loves us.
