Ash Wednesday Prayer

Today, with ash and with cross upon my head, I remember the curse of death that marks my soul if I am not in you, the shame of suffering if it is not with you, and the futility of life if it is not for you. I repent of my sin which weights heavy upon my shoulders. I trade the yoke of sin and suffering for your easy and light yoke. I turn from indifference toward the cross where together we will die for our friends whom we once made into enemies and for our enemies with whom we were once friends. Together we will turn the whole game upside down and put death on display as as a mockery as it puts us on display as burning bushes. With ash and with cross upon my head, I will follow you into the wilderness. Amen.
