Protect Marriage, Protect Children, Prohibit Divorce

There is a petition going around which has been signed by almost 7,000 people. It is called "Protect Marriage, Protect Children, Prohibit Divorce" and it reads like this:
Divorce destroys the sanctity of marriage and its powerful influence on the betterment of society. This proposition would keep the very meaning of marriage from being transformed into nothing more than a contractual relationship between two adults. Prohibiting divorce between heterosexual married couples will keep the interests of children and families intact. We will continue to celebrate marriage as the union of husband and wife, not as a relationship between "Party A" and "Party B." The marriage of a man and a woman has been at the heart of society since the beginning of time and it promotes the ideal opportunity for children to be raised by a mother and a father in a family held together by the legal, communal, and spiritual bonds of marriage. As a society we should put the best interests of children first, and those interests lie in traditional marriage. Permitting divorce destroys marriage as we know it and causes a profound harm to society. We should be restoring marriage, not undermining it.

And for those of you who voted yes on Prop 8 but disagree with this petition...Why? This petition is copied and pasted from literature from your website, ProtectMarriage.com, but applied to Divorce instead of Gay Marriage. So how can you argue with your own words?

Unfortunately, I don't think that this petition would be going around if Prop 8 had not been passed in California. I think it is highly reactionary but nevertheless it is both timely and true, pointing out to us the hypocrisy in how Prop 8 was sold to the public. If you voted yes on Prop 8 because you wanted to protect marriage and families and not out of hatred or discrimination, how could you pass up this petition?

I encourage you to sign this petition, even if only to make a point. In the end I know that legislation can't solve the real problems, I hope that some people might learn that valuable lesson in reading this petition.

I think that this is actually very funny because me and you were talking about this a while ago. If people are concerned about traditional marriage that much, divorce should be illegal too. So that is pretty funny that this surfaced. Although I do not agree with it, except purely as a way to show all those who voted Yes on 8 to protect traditional marriage what that would actually look like...

It is definitely reactionary, but it sure does make a point.

Agreed. It's ok to ban gay people, but not okay to ban alcohol, divorce, drugs, stupidity? Those are definitely more responsible than gays for destroying marriage.
