spriritual OCD

I just finished reading this Article , When a spiritual search turns into a compulsion. There is a form of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) called Scrupulosity that sounds like something we’d encourage in the Church. It is when individuals are consumed by religious and moral fervor. This disorder can lead to severe depression and suicidal tendencies. We can mistake the obsession of spiritual responsibility for passion or godliness. Often someone with this disorder will ask “are you sure I’m saved?” they are so pressured to know, and be certain of their salvation it consumes them. Brings new light on the question “do you know where you are going when you die?” We are not to be obsessed to the point where we can’t see God past our dedication to Him but we also cannot afford to lose our dedication to Him. Grace is free but salvation must be lived out. Read The article and see if your perspective isn’t changed.

It is so interesting what the church encourages people to do. It so often seems as though they are so consumed with achieving godliness they miss the harm they are causing by the constant pressure to be better and do better. Strange.
